Ahead of UP budget session ‘against’ Azam Khan, son leave Samajwadi Party MLAs’ meeting

Azam Khan, who was recently released from jail, and his son, an MLA, Abdullah Azam, did not attend the crucial meeting of Samajwadi Party legislators on Sunday, a day before the budget session of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly in Lucknow. Once again there is speculation that Aajam Khan Akhilesh Yadav’s uncle may follow the path of Shivpal, who had earlier accused the SP chief of neglect and disrespect.

The meeting was earlier called on Saturday but Akhilesh Yadav Had to go to Delhi for some important work, after which its timing was changed on 22 May. Akhilesh will finalize the party’s strategy for SP MLAs and MLCs to question the government on several issues. However, now with Azam Khan and Abdullah Azam not attending the meeting, SP’s concern may increase further in the coming days.

Speaking to News18, SP MLA Ravidas Mehrotra said, “Azam Khan’s health is not well so he could not come to attend today’s meeting. Both Azam Khan and his son Abdullah will attend the budget session tomorrow. Azam Khan will be sitting next to SP chief Akhilesh Yadav in the assembly.

Earlier on Friday, while talking to the media in Rampur, Azam Khan had said that behind his sorrows are his own people. But Khan also said on May 21 that he was neither angry with the party nor with the leadership. His absence from today’s meeting will likely further worsen his relationship with Akhilesh.

Khan, a Samajwadi Party MLA from Rampur (Sadar) assembly seat, was released after the Supreme Court granted him interim bail in the 89th case registered against him. While his family expressed happiness to have him back, he was joined by Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party Lohia chief Shivpal Yadav, who has been ‘supporting’ Khan relentlessly.

Akhilesh did not go to Sitapur to pick up Azam Khan when he was released from jail after 27 months. The absence of senior SP leaders has raised eyebrows for many from the minority community. However, after Khan’s release, Akhilesh Yadav said in a tweet that “lies have moments, not centuries”. He lauded the release of the leader from jail and said that by granting bail, the Supreme Court has set new standards of justice.
