Amlan breaks 100m national record

Amlan Borgohain, who holds the national record of 200m, has now crossed the 100m mark.

The 24-year-old from Assam clocked 10.25 s (wind speed +1.8, legal) to break the six-year-old national record of Amiya Kumar Malik (10.26 s) at the 87th All India Inter-Railway Athletics Championships in Rai. Bareilly on Monday.

Borgohain’s previous best, 10.34, came at the National Open in Warangal last year. However, it is nowhere near the entry standard (10.00s) for next year’s World Championships in Budapest.

So, what are the chances of it being confirmed as a national record?

“There is a process. It will be confirmed if the process is followed. It is an absolutely super performance by young Amlan,” said Adil Sumariwala, president of the Athletics Federation of India and a sprinter who ran in the 1980 Moscow Olympics Hindu on Monday.

“I am sure due process will be followed and confirmed.”

Meanwhile, the chairman of the AFI’s technical committee, Stanley Jones, said he would examine all reports before sending in time for Borgohain’s ratification.

“I look forward to all the reports, the photo finish images, the wind speed reports, the dope test reports… everything. Let me get those reports and then submit it for ratification,” Jones said.

According to railway sources, a dope test took place in the meeting.

Meanwhile, Himashree Roy won the women’s 100m in 11.42s while R Rajesh (46.73s) and Kiran Pahal (53.91s) won the men’s and women’s 400m titles.
