Mumbai: Twelve days after the car accident on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway, a gynecologist Dr. Anahita Pandole He had his first surgery on Thursday.
Doctors at RN Reliance Hospital performed a pelvic reconstruction surgery to treat complex fractures.
Doctors said that the pelvic reconstruction procedure was carried out to correct the physical defect caused by the accident, improve function and avoid further complications. Sources said 55-year-old Anahita had fractures on either side of the pelvis and a hip, which were addressed during Thursday’s procedure. The pelvis is a ring of bone at the level of the hip, made up of many different bones.
The hospital said the views of experts from the US, UK and Europe were sought in view of the complex fractures sustained by him. Dr Peter V Gianoudice, Head of the Academic Department of Trauma and Orthopedics Surgery at the University of Leeds, UK, has been sent to work with Indian doctors.
Dr Tarang Gyanchandi, CEO, HN Reliance Hospital said that the 9-10 hour long procedure went well. “Dr Anahita is fine and stable,” she said.
Anahita and her husband Darius, who were also seriously injured in the accident, are in the ICU, though their health condition has gradually improved.
“Anahita is conscious,” said Dr. Tarang. With regard to the recovery, he said that one cannot immediately put a timeline. “Whether she’ll need more surgery or how quickly she’ll recover, we’ll have the answers,” the CEO said.
The hospital team that carried out the procedure included Dr Vaibhav Bagaria, Director, Department of Orthopedics, Dr Dilip Tanna, Mentor Orthopedics, Orthopedic Surgeon Dr Darius Soonawalla and Senior Anesthetist Dr Daisy. Dr Tanna, a senior trauma surgeon, said pelvic fractures are the most common in highway accidents. “Any patient recovering from this type of injury remains wheelchair bound for at least three months before the injury heals and one can walk,” he said.
During this, Darius Pandole is stable, and is under observation, the hospital said.
On September 4, the day of the accident, Dyers was sitting next to Anahita who was driving the vehicle. Former Chairman of Tata Group Cyrus Mistry And his friend Jehangir Pandole, sitting in the back seat, died on the spot.
