The iPhone maker on Tuesday shelved plans to bring back an extra day a week to the office for employees unhappy with the proposed increase, amid a surge in Covid-19 cases in the San Francisco area and complaints from some workers.
After several delays, Apple began returning to the office at least one day a week in early April and plans to gradually increase it to three days over the next week. Workers had already resumed two days a week. Some employees have left the company on their determination to be more personal.
The company’s memo to employees on Tuesday did not include a new timeline for extending office hours. It was the latest twist in Apple’s efforts to return to some semblance of normality more than two years after the global pandemic affected daily life.
The Cupertino, Calif., tech giant was one of the first companies to send workers home as the coronavirus spread and it is one of the highest-profile examples of the challenges of balancing the return. As businesses large and small try to navigate a hybrid-work life, some have reduced their ambitions to return from three days a week to two days amidst a tight labor market and workers looking for more flexibility. .
