Senior India quarter-miler and Asian Games medalist MR Poovamma has been handed a two-year ban for failing a dope test last year as NADA’s Anti-Doping Appeals Panel (ADAP) handed him a three-month suspension. The dope sample of 32-year-old Poovamma, collected during the Indian Grand Prix I in Patiala on February 18 last year, came positive for the stimulant methylhexanamine, a specified substance under the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) code. In a June order, the Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel handed him a suspension of just three months.

On an appeal by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) against the disciplinary panel’s decision, the ADAP handed Poovamma a two-year ban.

The Anti-Doping Appeal Panel said, “We set aside the order dated 16.06.2022 passed by the Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel and allow the appeal of NADA and consequently impose a 02-year sanction under Article 10.2.2 of the disqualification of the athlete.” Huh.” Abhinav Mukherjee said in his order on 16 September.

“We also direct that all other competitive results obtained by the athlete under Article 10.10 from the date of sample collection i.e. 18.02. ” “Once the presence of a prohibited substance in an athlete’s body is established and no abusive or mitigating circumstances exist, natural consequences under the ADR emerge,” the appeals panel said. Poovamma was a member of the gold-winning 4x400m women’s and mixed relay teams at the 2018 Asian Games and was also a part of the gold-winning 4x400m relay team at the 2014 Asian Games.

He also won bronze in the individual 400m at the 2012 Asian Games. He received the Arjuna Award in 2015.

Speculation was rife over Poovamma’s dope flunk after she was ruled out of the relay trials in Patiala a few weeks before the Tokyo Olympics last year. He later left the national camp which surprised many.
