Barber turned billionaire: Inspiring story of Ramesh Babu

According to Forbes, there are a total of 140 billionaires in India who come from different backgrounds and contribute in different fields. However, a billionaire is different because his primary profession is hard to believe at first.

She is a hairdresser. Yes, you heard that right. Ramesh Babu, known as the ‘Billionaire Barber’ of India, is one of the 140 billionaires in India who own over 400 luxurious cars, including high-end brands such as Rolls Royce, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar and BMW. Huh.

Coming from a simple background, Ramesh climbed the ladder of success with diligence and is now sitting on top of a gold mine. Here is his story:

Ramesh was born in Bangalore to a family of five. His father P Gopal used to run a barber shop. Ramesh lost his father when he was seven years old and saw the beginning of turmoil in his life at a very young age. With no breadwinner in the family, her mother raised three children and worked as a servant in various households to feed her children. She also rented a barber shop, her husband left her at Rs 5 a day, as she could not run the shop herself.

As soon as Ramesh turned 13, he started contributing to the family’s income by doing whatever was convenient, including newspaper and milk distribution. Till class 10th, Ramesh continued his studies and later left to look after the shop full time. He transformed an ordinary barbershop into a trendy hair-styling salon called ‘Inner Space’.

In 1993, Ramesh realized that he needed to extend his arms in business to give a better life to his relatives. So, with the savings of the saloon and the help of his uncle, he bought a Maruti Omni van and rented it out as he could not drive the vehicle due to paucity of time.

The Omni van became the turning point in Ramesh’s life. His first business contract opened his mind to the full potential of the business. Gradually, the fleet of vehicles grew bigger and grander until 2004, when it became even more luxurious with its first elegant addition, the Mercedes E Class sedan, which cost them Rs 38 lakhs.

Today, Ramesh Babu, apart from his saloon, is a proud owner of Ramesh Tours & Travels and rents out top-end cars, buses and other general cars, totaling up to 400. Dozens of Innovas piled up and BMWs to Roll Royce Ghost and Mercedes Maybach.

Despite being a billionaire, he still spends a quarter of a day in his salon taking care of his clients.

Along with being a billionaire barber, he is also an inspiration to all those entrepreneurs who doubt their potential or lack the motivation to dream and achieve big.
