BDA to resume construction of two additional lanes for Hebbal flyover after it was stalled in 2019 after BMRCL’s objection

The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) has decided to resume construction to add two lanes to the Hebbal flyover, which was halted two years ago.

In 2019, the project was shelved midway, citing objections from the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL).

BMRCL had objected to the construction of an additional loop to the existing flyover for motorists coming to enter the city from Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) along the way of the proposed alignment under Phase III of Namma Metro from Kempapura to JP. I will come Town.

The BDA had already constructed 13 of the 40 pillars planned to add an additional two lanes.

Meanwhile, Rail Infrastructure Technical Engineering Services (RITES) was tasked with a study to identify solutions to reduce traffic gridlock and accommodate future expansion of other mass transit systems.

Recently, the BDA proposed a plan to decongest the Hebbal flyover junction, including construction of additional lanes for motorists arriving from the airport and entering the city, construction of a new flyover for traffic to and from KR Puram. , connecting one branch with the main lane of the flyover, and connecting the other lane to the national highway.

The BDA did not fully agree with the plans proposed by RITES by including these plans. BDA officials say that most of the proposals are not viable and there is a need for land acquisition.

BDA President SR Vishwanath said: “BDA has decided to restart the project by including future expansion. The state government had directed the BDA to issue a fresh tender to resume the work. However, no one came forward to take up the stalled work as it involved many challenges. They will not be willing to take the blame if something goes wrong. We have conveyed to the government that it would be better if the old contractors keep working themselves.

Along with the construction of an additional loop, as per the original plan approved in 2015-16, the BDA also wanted to build a unidirectional underpass for traffic from Tumakuru Road side to KR Puram.

The BDA had spent Rs 25 crore on the half-finished work.

As per the plan, the up ramp of the proposed lane starts near the road, which is being used by motorists coming from Esteem Mall side and heading towards Tumakuru Road.

The two-lane down ramp will end near Baptist Hospital connecting the main streets leading to Mekhri Circle.

BMRCL MD says metro line will go to level two

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) now says that there is no problem in building additional lanes if they are built on a level parallel to the existing flyover.

BMRCL MD Anjum Parvez said: “We do not see any problem in constructing additional lanes, if they are built at a level parallel to the existing flyover. These things are being made aware of the BDA in many high level meetings. Under the third phase, our proposed metro line will go to the second level. It will come from Kempapura side and will go towards BEL circle.

The proposed metro station under the ORR-Airport line (KIA from Central Silk Board) will come up near the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) bus depot.

In future, Hebbal will have a suburban railway station under the Baiyappanahalli – Chikbanavara line, except for metro stations.
