Behind BJP’s big Uttar Pradesh victory: Silent women voters

The reason behind the BJP’s historic second term victory in Uttar Pradesh, which no government has been able to achieve in the last 37 years, is the women voters who united behind the party over the free rations given for the past two years. And better law and order.

The high female turnout combined with the “silent female voter” tending to vote for a party that transcended caste and social lines, which sent it rations and ensured that women in the state could stay out at night without fear.

Even the promise of free electricity made by Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav could not take women voters to the SP camp.

In fact, realizing during the campaign that the move of free ration was doing magic on the ground for the BJP, the SP announced in its manifesto that it would also provide free ration for the next five years if voted to power. At the same time, the SP kept reminding the women voters that the BJP’s free ration scheme would end in March.

However, the women did not like the SP’s narrative. Every village that News18 visited during the campaign, women showed bags with Modi-Yogi faces that the government had used to send them food grains. While the Modi government sent free ration to the poor, the Yogi government doubled it with rations on its own, leading many to describe it as a “double dose of ration” and many women telling News18 that “Modi Yogi did not starve “Marne Diya”.

Another major factor that influenced women voters was better law and order, with News18 reporting late workers in the sugarcane fields of Muzaffarnagar, girls scooting and cycling in villages or newly opened cafes in smaller towns. found food. While the Yogi government’s anti-Romeo squad move was criticized by many, it seems to have worked on the ground to instill fear among local goons who used to harass women and girls on the streets.

This was a very clear change on the ground that was evident to the women. The BJP has instilled “fear” among women voters that if the SP comes to power, the old days of hooliganism and hooliganism will return and the situation for women in the state will become difficult again. It was also a sign of the low attendance of women in Akhilesh Yadav’s big rallies and road shows, where youths would break barricades and come near the stage. In comparison, the BJP has always had space for women to attend the rallies of its top leaders.

It is not that the SP did not realize that women voters were rallying for the BJP. The party sent Dimple Yadav and Jaya Bachchan to campaign to reach out to women at a later stage, but it was too late. Several women from villages told News18 that they have not only received rations, but also a new promise of PM housing, a house under the Ujjwala cylinder and a drinking water tap connection to their house – and the same benefits without any discrimination. Received a deduction or kickback to be paid for.

Although inflation was a recurring theme in elections, which the Samajwadi Party thought would affect the female voter, the benefits women got from the Modi-Yogi government outweighed everything else. From News18 to Sumitra Devi, a woman found in a potato field in Kannauj, whom we met in a village in Chauri-Chaura, said they would vote for Modi who sent them rations. The women said, “Whoever sent ration, gave security, vote for him.”

Ultimately, it was women who fully supported Modi and Yogi in UP.
