A 30-year-old photographer from Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, has traveled across the country from Kashmir to Kanyakumari in a month with a message to spread awareness about mental health amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Varun Namdev returned to the city last week by bicycle from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, completing an arduous 3,600-km journey in about a month’s time. A member of ‘The New Golfers’ Cycling Group, Varun took up cycling last year to overcome the mental issues induced by the lockdown. He started his cycle journey named ‘Pedal 4 Mental Health’ from Katra town of Jammu and Kashmir on 13th December and completed the Yatra in Kanyakumari on 13th January.

“In total, I cycled for 24 days. I reserved six days to repair the cycle and recharge my body,” said Varun, adding that he cycles an average of 150 km these days. With good planning and preparation, Varun turned extremely cold and humid in the south. Managed to deal with problems like situation in India.

Varun said, “Before the national trip, I trained with short trips and did yoga, apart from doing weight training before the journey started.” He said that he crossed 12 states as part of his journey. The post-lockdown led to mental health issues among the people at home, especially children. “Our group does a variety of physical and outdoor activities to get life back on track after the lockdown,” the cyclist said.

“I managed to talk to a large number of people during the visit and discuss the subject of the journey. In turn, I was inspired by people I’ve visited in several states who set out on similar trips by foot, bicycle, or running. Many of these individuals were running long missions for ‘Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao’, girl child education and many other social messages,” Namdev said. Will resume engaging the public with activities to combat the pandemic, he said.
