BJP MLA arrested for flouting election rules in Bengal

Five BJP members, including Pursurah MLA Biman Ghosh, were arrested on Sunday for allegedly violating the State Election Commission’s (SEC) guidelines while campaigning for civic polls in Chandannagar area of ​​West Bengal’s Hooghly district.

Elections to Chandannagar, Bidhannagar, Siliguri and Asansol municipal corporations are to be held on January 22.

According to an official of the Chandannagar Police Commissionerate, Mr Ghosh was leading a rally of 100 people in ward number 26, where Sandhya Das is a BJP candidate, flouting the COVID-19 guidelines. There was a dispute when an officer told the MLA that he was violating the rules.

Five members of the BJP, including Mr. Ghosh and Ms. Das, were then arrested.

He was released on bail later in the day, the official said.
