BJP to organize state unit in search of new faces in Chhattisgarh

Amid infighting and factionalism, the BJP’s central leadership has sent a strong message to its Chhattisgarh unit asking it to fix its house before next year’s assembly elections. The party is exploring the possibility of a new leadership in Chhattisgarh before the assembly elections.

BJP ruled Chhattisgarh for 15 years from 2003 to 2018. National Vice President of the party, Dr. Raman Singh was the Chief Minister for 15 years. BJP politics in Chhattisgarh revolved around Singh for almost two decades and he still has some influence.

The defeat in last month’s bypolls has raised concerns in the BJP over next year’s assembly polls as the Khairagarh assembly constituency comes under former chief minister Singh’s home district.

“The defeat in Khairagarh has raised serious questions about Singh’s leadership and the result shows that he is losing ground. The defeat in the bypolls has forced the party to look for fresh faces for leadership roles in Chhattisgarh,” said a party insider.

Last month, the BJP’s central leadership held discussions with leaders from Chhattisgarh on party affairs in the state. Sources claimed that the central leadership is not happy with the functioning of Chhattisgarh BJP and pulled up the state leadership for the present situation.

“The state BJP leadership has made it clear that the party will not present the chief ministerial face for the assembly elections to be held next year. A senior leader will be appointed as the head of the party’s election campaign and will be given full leeway to manage all election related matters.

Besides finding a new face for the party in Chhattisgarh, the BJP leadership is also keeping social issues in mind. A senior functionary said all social factors existing in the state would be considered before finalizing any name for the leadership role (not the chief ministerial face).

“The party leadership will take a final call on whether to project any tribal, OBC or any other caste,” he said.

After Singh was made the chief minister of the state in 2003, the BJP contested elections in 2008, 2013 and 2018 with Singh as the party’s face. But the BJP suffered a humiliating defeat in the previous assembly elections of 2018 and the party also lost in the subsequent by-elections in the state.

Another leader said there was an urgent need for a new face. “Current Chhattisgarh BJP President Vishnu Deo Sai and Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly Dharamlal Kaushik, close to the former Chief Minister, may also be changed, so that a fresh and fresh face can be brought together to bring all sections together to overthrow the Congress government. way to be made. in the state,” he said.
