Reliance spent Rs 1,185 crore on Corporate Social Responsibility in FY22

Billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Ltd. spent a record Rs 1,184.93 crore in the financial year ended March 31 on corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, according to the company’s latest annual CSR report, which triggered the second wave of the pandemic, education and healthcare. It went beyond support staff as well as their extended families and was aimed at providing care to the most needy across India in case of emergency.

“During FY 2021-22, Reliance contributed Rs 1,184.93 crore to support several need-based, impactful CSR initiatives,” it said. The initiative was spearheaded by the Reliance Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Nita M. Ambani-led company. “The last two years have been about ‘seva’ or service to humanity,” the oil-to-telecom-to-retail group said. “While the year 2021 began with much hope, it also marked the most severe second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic – the biggest humanitarian crisis that has affected the world and our country.” Through the pandemic, Reliance said it worked to meet the nation’s emerging, urgent needs during an unpredictable pandemic situation, while working to empower communities to rebuild their lives.

“It was not about Corporate Social Responsibility. It was about saving, securing and reviving lives and dreams and hopes for a better future,” it said. During the FY 2021-22 (April 2021 to March 2022), Reliance took several initiatives through its pillars of work for rural transformation, health, education, disaster response as well as development initiatives.

Giving details of its pandemic response, the report said that over 8.5 crore free meals were distributed to frontline workers and vulnerable communities. Reliance produced 1,000 tonnes of oxygen every day during the second wave and provided it free of cost for over 1 lakh patients to the states. In addition, it has set up a 2,000+ bedded hospital for COVID care. As part of its rural initiative, it created 121 lakh cubic meters of water harvesting capacity, assuring over 5,600 hectares of land to irrigate for at least two cropping seasons. It helped meet nutritional needs of 10,896 rural households and trained 22,000 members of SHGs.

“Most importantly, its COVID-19 response to support the nation and its people, launched through five missions, continues to pivot and accelerate during the year based on urgent and emerging needs,” it said. “Mission Oxygen and Mission Vaccine Safety were launched to address the nation’s needs for medical oxygen and community immunization.” Other missions including Mission Anna Sewa, Mission COVID Infra and Mission Staff Care were strengthened and sustained based on the emerging COVID-19 situation.

The report said, “Across India, Reliance worked for community development, strengthening institutions, and quality education in schools and better lives of communities, while providing quality healthcare, especially in situations induced by the pandemic.” during,” the report said. Reliance works to drive transformative change across India, to build a strong, inclusive nation by enabling lives and livelihoods. “Throughout the year, concerted action reaffirmed the promise that every available resource will be deployed to meet the needs of the most vulnerable communities across India.”
