A sessions court here on Thursday dismissed the application of Lakdawala, a former aide of fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim, who is facing several criminal cases, including those of the Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA).

Lakdawala was arrested in January 2020 and has been lodged in neighboring Navi Mumbai’s Taloja jail since then.

Mosquito net seized for security reasons

He had recently filed an application in the court seeking permission to use mosquito nets. In his application, Lakdawala said that when he was sent to judicial custody in 2020, he was allowed to use mosquito nets, but in May this year, jail authorities confiscated the nets citing security concerns .

When Lakdawala was produced in the sessions court on Thursday, he showed a plastic bottle filled with dead mosquitoes and said that the inmates of Taloja jail have to face this problem every day. But the jail authorities opposed the plea citing security reasons.

Use Odomos: Court

The court, while rejecting the application, said that the accused applicant (Lakdawala) may have used Odomos and other mosquito repellants.

Apart from Lakdawala, several undertrials of Taloja Jail have also filed similar applications.

In some cases, the request was granted, while in many others it was denied.

Gangster DK Rao was allowed by one judge to use mosquito nets by the court, but the second judge did not allow some of the accused in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist link case and the jail authorities were directed to take all necessary precautions. To prevent mosquito menace.

In September this year, activist Gautam Navlakha had also filed an application seeking permission to use a net, which is still pending.
