Brazil’s Jair Bolsonaro vows to “remain active” in politics

On Tuesday, Bolsonaro again raised questions over his election defeat.

Orlando:

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro intends to “remain active in Brazilian politics”, he said at a reception in Orlando, Florida, on Tuesday.

The far-right leader made the promise to about 400 supporters gathered in the city by Yes Brazil USA, a conservative organization of Brazilian expatriates in the United States.

Bolsonaro was defeated in the last election by leftist Luis Inácio Lula da Silva, and left Brazil on 30 December, two days before his rival’s inauguration.

His lawyer said on Monday that he has been in the US since then and is seeking a six-month visa there.

He has repeatedly cast doubt on the integrity of the election, and on 8 January hundreds of his supporters stormed the seat of power in Brasília, ransacking the presidential palace, Congress and the Supreme Court.

On Tuesday, Bolsonaro again raised questions over his election defeat.

“Many people are still shaken by what happened in the elections (…) But we will face this moment and, God willing, we will win together,” he said, describing himself as “more popular than ever”. Telling said.

But he said he was sorry for what “some inconsiderate people did” on 8 January.

Bolsonaro has come under investigation regarding the riots, the new government has ordered an inquiry into him.

He has kept a fairly low profile since moving to Florida. He is staying at former Brazilian martial arts champion José Aldo’s Orlando home near Disney World and has been photographed eating fried chicken alone at a KFC restaurant.
