Brentford striker Ivan Toney racially abused after scoring against Arsenal

Brentford have condemned the “barrage” of racist abuse sent at striker Ivan Toney on social media after he scored an equalizer in Saturday’s 1-1 Premier League draw with leaders Arsenal.

Toney, who scored a header to cancel out Leandro Trossard’s earlier strike in the 74th minute, was also targeted earlier this season in October following Brentford’s 2–0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion.

“Soon after Brentford’s game against Arsenal, Ivan Toni received a barrage of abusive, racist direct messages via his Instagram account,” the club said on Sunday.

“We are disappointed and saddened that Evan has had to deal with this again.”

Arsenal said they are working with Brentford to identify those involved.

“We stand by Ivan Toni,” Arsenal said. “At Arsenal, we condemn all forms of discrimination and adopt a zero-tolerance approach. We will enforce the strongest possible action against anyone we identify sending hateful messages.”

Toni’s goal cleared a lengthy VAR check but Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta later questioned the decision, saying it should have been disallowed for offside.

Referees’ body PGMOL on Sunday admitted it was the wrong call and one of two “significant errors” in the weekend’s games.
