Businessman, IPL founder, Sushmita Sen’s fiance: Who is Lalit Modi?

The internet is abuzz with reports of former Miss Universe and Bollywood actress Sushmita Sen dating business tycoon Lalit Modi. On Thursday, Modi announced on Instagram that he is dating the first Indian Miss Universe Sen. Lalit ModiWho is the first chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL), posted a set of pictures with the former beauty queen and referred to her as his “better half”.

Lalit Modi wrote on Instagram and Twitter, “After a dizzying global tour in London with #maldives #sardinia families – not to mention my #betterhalf @sushmitasen47 – a fresh start a new life finally.” , They later clarified that they are not married and that they are “just dating.” “Not married – just dating each other,” he wrote in another post.

Who is Lalit Modi?

Born in Delhi in 1963, Modi was the founder and first chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL) that began in 2008.

The 58-year-old studied engineering and business administration in the USA. According to ESPN, Lalit Modi controversially changed the landscape of cricket before exiting the stage, and dramatically as he entered. The IPL, the multimillion-dollar, football-style, franchise-based domestic league that Modi conceived and executed with resounding success, has increasingly influenced cricket.

“Modi’s rise to the top notch of Indian cricket was as swift as it was astonishing. A descendant of a prominent Indian business family, he began his career as an opponent of the Indian Cricket Board in the early 90s, when he was trying to build a business from the distribution of sports pay channels. He knew even then that live sports was one of the few things Indian television consumers would pay for, but he soon realized that the best way to beat the system was to get involved. However, it was not until 2005, when he became the youngest vice-president of the BCCI, that he rose to prominence,” ESPN said.

Modi became the driving force of BCCI’s business activities and increased its revenue to over US$ 1 billion. However, the end was met with an unexpected controversy – revelations over the auction of two new IPL franchises – and was swift. Fifteen days after his initial indiscreet tweet, Modi was given his suspension notice by the BCCI, ironically moments from the emotional closing ceremony of the 2010 IPL final.

The BCCI has suspended Modi on charges of misconduct, indiscipline and financial irregularities along with two rigged bids for two new franchises Pune Warriors and Kochi Tuskers. The BCCI launched an investigation against him and in 2013 imposed a life ban on him after a committee found him guilty of these charges.

He has since lived out of London, United Kingdom, and has given several interviews claiming innocence on all charges leveled by the BCCI. A special court in Mumbai had in 2015 issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against Lalit Modi for his alleged involvement in a money laundering case registered by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Lalit Modi’s first wife

Earlier, Lalit Modi was married to Minal Modi, who died in 2018 at the age of 64 while battling cancer. Minal had two children from Modi. The couple had a daughter named Alia and a son named Ruchir.
