Capital follows lockdown restrictions

The state-wide lockdown observed on Sunday was almost complete in the capital district, with the public largely indoors and avoiding gathering in public places.

The restrictions were necessitated by the alarming levels of COVID-19 spread with Thiruvananthapuram having the highest caseload in the state.

In the state capital, the city police had deployed a large contingent of personnel to screen vehicles at around 60 checking points since 7 am.

In addition, 18 entry/exit points along the city limits were closed to restrict movement for essential services.

The main roads remained deserted for most of the day. The police took a tough stand to prevent unnecessary travel. Those headed to procure essential commodities, attend marriages and religious functions and report for duty in essential services were allowed to travel.

Law enforcers also scrutinized affidavits, identity and travel documents.

Despite the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) deciding to run a large number of buses, the central bus station at Thampanur received little patronage. Traders said that many commercial outlets, even in Chala, remained closed in anticipation of lower sales, with district authorities allowing those trading essential items to function from 7 am to 9 pm, many Customers preferred home delivery, despite police allowing take-away, traders said. ,

According to official data, 56 people were booked under the provisions of the Kerala Epidemic Diseases Act, while 22 were arrested for various violations.
