admission to Delhi University (DU) From the next academic year, colleges can be based solely on Common University Entrance Test (CUET) scores, if a proposal in this regard is approved by the decision-making bodies of the university. DU’s academic council will meet on March 22 to discuss the change in admission criteria as the university has decided to opt for CUET from the 2022-23 academic year. The decisions taken in the academic council meeting are likely to be taken at the university’s executive council meeting to be held on March 25.

The Executive Council is the highest decision-making body of the University. The Standing Committee of the Academic Council, in its meeting on March 17, had recommended that admission to the university would be on the basis of CUET scores only.

According to the minutes of the meeting, the members said that it would not be possible to include any other criteria on the basis of marks obtained in the board examinations. The minutes stated that the members felt that the eligibility criteria should be inclusive for inviting large number of candidates from across the country.

“Minimum criteria to be redefined as candidates must have passed class XII examination or its equivalent from the same recognized board,” read the minutes of the meeting. Members have suggested that candidates should appear in CUET only in those subjects in which they have passed class 12.

If, the subject studied in Class 12 is not mentioned in CUET, the members proposed that the candidates should appear in the subject which is similar or closely related to the subject studied in Class 12. “The merit will be calculated on the basis of combination. Number of subjects in which a candidate has appeared in CUET as mentioned in the programme-specific eligibility,” the minute read.

The Standing Committee was also of the view that admission to all additional seats, except foreign students, should be done through CUET. It proposed that for admission to courses under the Faculty of Music and Fine Arts, and BSc in Physical Education and Sports, combined CUET scores and performance based tests, both with 50 per cent weightage, be given.

It was also decided that admission to minority colleges like St. Stephen’s and Jesus and Mary would also be done through CUET. During the centralized counselling, separate merit list will be prepared for unreserved and minority candidates as per the reservation policy for these colleges.

Under the cut-off system, these colleges release separate cut-offs and candidates seeking admission in these colleges have to fill two forms – a college specific form and a university common form. However, the members have decided to recommend that admission to School of Open Learning (SOL) and Non-Collegiate Women’s Education Board (NCWEB) will be as per the previous exercise.

For NCWEB, the cut-off is released, whereas for SOL, different subjects require different eligibility criteria and different marks. The committee also recommended that National Testing Agency (NTA) may be requested to add Geology, Environmental Studies, Languages in Section-II (Domain Specific Subjects) of CUET.

If these subjects are included, the program specific eligibility will be suitably amended. As per the tentative structure of CUET, there will be three sections.

Section-I will have questions on reading comprehension, verbal ability, synonyms and antonyms. Candidates can choose any one of the 13 languages for this section. Section-II will be subject specific and so far 27 subjects have been listed under it.

Section-III will have two sub-sections – Common Test for Vocational and Open Eligibility Programme. Meanwhile, the members have suggested to take admission in postgraduate and PhD programs for the academic session 2022-2023 through Delhi University Entrance Test (DUET), which will be conducted by NTA as per the previous exercise.

However, they are likely to give some relaxation in eligibility conditions with due approval from statutory bodies in the light of the new National Education Policy (NEP). It was decided to create additional fields for capturing data related to CGPA, GPA and percentage in the postgraduate registration form.

The issue of admission to the College of Arts, which was not being taken up by the Delhi University for the last few academic sessions, was taken up for discussion in the Standing Committee meeting. Delhi University was informed that the office of the Lieutenant Governor has given in-principle approval to merge the College of Art (CoA) with the city government-run Ambedkar University, subject to its affiliation from DU. “The Standing Committee recommended that admission to the College of Arts may be taken by the University, if it is not affiliated to the University of Delhi,” read the minutes. DU has not yet approved D-affiliation.
