China’s Coast Guard escorts Japanese ships away from disputed waters

China calls the islands the Diaoyu, while Japan calls them the Senkaku.

Beijing:

China’s coast guard on Monday chased Japanese ships off the waters around disputed islands in the East China Sea, according to Chinese state media.

The disputed islands in the East China Sea, claimed by both China and Japan, have long been a sticking point in bilateral relations. China calls the islands the Diaoyu, while Japan calls them the Senkaku.

State broadcaster CCTV reported that China Marine Police spokesman Gan Yu said the “Shinsei Maru” and four other Japanese ships illegally entered the territorial waters of the Diaoyu Islands before being driven off by Chinese coast guard ships.

“We urge the Japanese side to immediately stop all illegal activities in these waters and ensure that such incidents do not recur,” Gan was quoted as saying.
