Sunday’s tally was more than five times the number of cases the country reported last Sunday (6,542). This is in line with reports of such massive growth omicronIt has spread to other countries, although the percentage of people who become infected with the new version is not yet accurately estimated.
This week’s number of cases also saw India’s highest since October 4-10, nearly three months ago, when 1.37 lakh infections were recorded.

The biggest jump in numbers was recorded in Maharashtra, which recorded 41,980 cases during the week, close to the count recorded from the entire country in the previous week. This week’s number in Maharashtra was more than five times the state’s tally compared to the previous week (8,292).
Bihar recorded the highest weekly percentage increase, with cases rising from 85 to 1,073 in the week of December 20-26, a 12-fold increase, though the absolute number was far lower.
Bengal recorded the second highest weekly number of cases at 18,524, more than five times the previous week’s tally of 3,550. Overall, weekly cases rose in 30 out of 36 states/UTs, another figure now turning into a wave. A notable exception to the increase was Kerala, where the numbers have declined by 1% this week. However, this week’s significant lack of fall could be a harbinger of rising cases in the southern state as well.
Meanwhile, India recorded 1,897 deaths during the week, down 22% from the previous week’s toll of 2,441. However, most of the deaths recorded over the past several weeks are chronic deaths that are now being added to the record, mainly by Kerala.
