Lucknow: A court of Special Chief Judicial Magistrate (Customs) on Wednesday summoned the directors and producers of Netflix for defaming Sahara India and its chief Subrata Roy in the documentary series ‘Bad Boys Billionaires India’.

Netflix director Abhishek Nag, documentary director Nick Reed and producer Reva Sharma were summoned for the documentary series released on Netflix last year.

Judge Sunil Kumar ordered the trio to appear in court on November 15 for trial for offenses under sections 500 (defamation), 501 (defamatory to the matter of printing or engraving) and 502 (sale of printed or engraved) IPC. has instructed. substances containing defamatory substances).

The court passed the order on a complaint case filed by Sahara India and its employees.

The court, in its order, said that on the basis of the complaint and the statements of witnesses Ghulam Zeeshan and Bhuvnesh Mani Tripathi, prima facie a case of defamation is made out against the three accused.

While registering the case, the complainant alleged that the accused produced and released the said documentary series on Netflix on October 5, 2020 in the most derogatory manner to malign the image of Sahara and its chief.

The complaint said, a bare look of the documentary indicates that in a bid to make the documentary spicy and rhetorical, all the accused deliberately attempted to portray the chairman of Sahara Group in bad taste, with no material evidence against them. Was.

Witnesses said that the documentary was produced only to gain commercial gains and hence Netflix spiced up the documentary by portraying the bad image of Subroto Roy and Sahara India, which is not only objectionable but also derogatory.

After considering the entire material on record, the court observed that the accused persons had committed the offenses of defamation and hence they should be called to face trial.

Sahara had opposed the documentary from the beginning and tried hard to tell Netflix not to release it on its web portal but it was released. Angered by this, the group and its employees moved the court.

Sahara also filed a Rs 500 crore damages suit against Netflix in Kolkata and the court concerned has issued notice to Netflix for its response. Sahara’s press release said the group also intends to quantify the loss.
