Covid: Ahead of festive season, government warns against mass gatherings

India is still in the midst of a second coronavirus wave even as cases continue to decline, with the central government warning on Thursday that people should not let their guard down.

Keeping in view the upcoming festive season, the government urged people to avoid mass gatherings in containment zones and districts with more than 5% positivity rate.

Addressing the media on the coronavirus situation in the country, the government said that India has vaccinated two-thirds of the adult population with at least one dose and nearly a quarter of the population has been vaccinated with both doses.

Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said: “For the 12th week in a row, the weekly positivity rate continues to decline and is below 3%… the recovery rate in the country is 97.8%.”

Bhushan said, “66% of the 18+ population has received at least one dose of COVID vaccines; 23% of the 18+ population has received both. We are able to achieve this because of the tremendous work by some states. are capable of.”

“Four states/UTs have more than 90% coverage of the first dose – these are Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Kerala, Ladakh and Uttarakhand.”

In the last 24 hours, around 31,000 asymptomatic cases have been reported in India and most of these infections have been found in the two states of Kerala and Maharashtra.

“However, the absolute numbers have come down. In the last week, 62.73% of the total cases have been reported from Kerala,” the government said.

Speaking on the recognition of the Kovidshield vaccine by the UK, Rajesh Bhushan said that the Indian government is in talks with the relevant authorities and is trying to find a solution to address the issue soon.
