Covid Alert: Record 1,634 new cases in Delhi, Maharashtra’s recovery rate at 98.11%

covid-19 caseDelhi recorded 1,634 new cases of Covid on Sunday, taking the death toll to 26,563 with three deaths, according to data shared by the city’s government health department.

Delhi’s Covid tally rises to 20,23,227. It said that in one of the recent deaths, the major cause of death was Covid.

According to the bulletin, the fresh cases came out of 5,505 tests conducted on the previous day. On Saturday, Delhi had recorded 1,396 COVID-19 cases with a positivity rate of 31.9 per cent – the highest in 15 months.

The capital had seen a positivity rate of 30.6 per cent on January 14 last year. The department did not issue the bulletin on Friday. Delhi recorded 1,527 Covid cases and two deaths on Thursday with a positivity rate of 27.77 per cent.

The daily number of Covid-19 cases in the national capital crossed 1,000 on Wednesday for the first time in more than seven months, while the positivity rate stood at 23.8 per cent. Last year, 1,964 cases were registered in Delhi on August 18.

The number of Covid cases had dropped to zero on January 16 for the first time since the outbreak of the pandemic. However, the city has seen a spurt in cases in the last fortnight. Of the 7,951 beds in Delhi’s dedicated Covid hospitals, 270 are occupied, while 3,393 patients are under home isolation, said a health department bulletin on Sunday.

Currently the number of active cases is 5,297. A mock drill was conducted in Delhi hospitals on 11th April to ascertain their preparedness to deal with Covid. Medical experts have said that the Omicron sub-variant XBB.1.16 could trigger a surge in cases in the city.

However, he added that there is no need to panic and people should follow Covid-appropriate behavior and take their booster shots. Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj said last week that XBB.1.16 does not cause severe infection in children.

Maharashtra recorded 650 new coronavirus infections and two deaths on Sunday, taking the number of cases to 81,55,839 and the toll to 1,48,479, the state health department said. A day earlier, the state had recorded 660 cases and two deaths due to COVID-19.

182 new cases were registered in Mumbai. A health official said the two fresh deaths in the state were reported from Mumbai city and Thane city. The death rate in the state now stands at 1.82 per cent.

As many as 10,093 new coronavirus infections were added in India, while active cases rose to 57,542, according to the Union health ministry’s data updated on Sunday. The death toll has risen to 5,31,114 with 23 deaths.

While five deaths were reported from Delhi, three each from Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, two each from Karnataka and Maharashtra, one each from Haryana, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Uttarakhand and four by Kerala, the data updated at 8 am showed.
