Cyclone Gulab: Heavy rain likely in these states as cyclone alert is issued

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday informed that a depression over Bay of Bengal, which intensified further, is likely to concentrate into a cyclonic storm by tomorrow.

Cyclone Gulab is very likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm in the next 12 hours, the IMD said, adding, “It may move almost westwards and between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur around Kalingapatnam in north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha by the evening of 26 September. May cross the coasts,” the IMD said.

  • Issuing a cyclone warning for north Andhra Pradesh and adjoining south Odisha coasts, the IMD said in a tweet, “A deep depression lies about 410 km east of Gopalpur and 480 km east-northeast of Kalingapatnam.”
  • On Saturday, light to moderate rain at most places would occur over Odisha and Coastal Andhra Pradesh with isolated heavy rains.
  • Light to moderate rain is also likely at most places on Sunday, with heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places and very heavy falls at isolated places over South Odisha and North Coastal Andhra Pradesh.
  • Parts of Telangana and Chhattisgarh may also receive heavy rains tomorrow.
  • On September 27, light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places very likely over Odisha and Telangana and heavy to very heavy falls at isolated places over Coastal West Bengal.
  • It predicted wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph and gusting to 70 kmph over northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal. The Met Office said that the wind speed is likely to increase gradually to 70-80 kmph and gusting to 90 kmph on Sunday.
  • The sea condition will be rough to very rough for the next three days.
  • Fishermen in Odisha, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh have been asked not to venture into east-central and adjoining northeast Bay of Bengal till Monday.
  • Localized flooding of roads, low-lying areas likely due to torrential rains in Coastal Andhra Pradesh tomorrow.
  • Special Relief Commissioner (SRC), Odisha has asked all district collectors to remain alert in view of the weather forecast.
