Cyclone Sitarang: IMD issues heavy rain warning for Assam

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued “Red” and “Orange” alerts for heavy rains in several districts of Assam for the next two days in view of Cyclone “Sitang”.

The IMD reported a low pressure area forming over North Andaman Sea and adjoining areas of South Andaman Sea and over southeast Bay of Bengal.

Thereafter, it will likely turn northwards on October 24 and intensify into a cyclonic storm over west-central and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal. Thereafter, it is forecast to continue moving north-northeastwards, while crossing Odisha coast en route to West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts on October 25.

The IMD also advised fishermen not to venture into the Bay of Bengal and those already in the sea should return to the coast at the earliest.
