Delhi most unsafe metro for women

A report by the National Crime Records Bureau (NRCB) shows that the national capital has reported the highest number of rape cases among all the 19 metropolitan cities, with an average of three rape cases being reported every day last year.

For the third year in a row, Delhi has topped the list of crimes against women among all the metropolitan cities. In 2021, crimes against women increased by 40% compared to the previous year, with 1,226 incidents of rape and 136 incidents of dowry death.

In July, the city witnessed massive outrage over the alleged gang-rape of a 30-year-old woman by four railway employees inside an electrical maintenance room at the New Delhi railway station.

The city also recorded the highest number of crimes against children and senior citizens in the country.

In the category of crimes against women, Delhi also tops the list of metropolitan cities in cases of cruelty by husband or relatives, registering 4,674 such cases in 2021.

Senior police officials said that most of the incidents of rape and assault of women are done by people known to the victims, which the police cannot directly stop.

“Around 95% of crimes against women are committed by their relatives and hence are not law and order related crimes. The police have no direct control over such incidents.
