Destination Dream College looks ahead, say CUET candidates disappointed with normalized scores

The “Normalisation” of marks in CUET-UG has disappointed many candidates as they found that their marks have fallen short of their original marks, making it difficult for them to get the college of their dreams. The results of the first edition of Common University Entrance Test (CUET)-UG were declared on Friday. The University Grants Commission (UGC) also clarified that the universities will prepare the merit list on the basis of normal NTA score and not on the basis of percentile or raw marks.

While the UGC chief claimed that the normalization has been done to provide an “equal playing field” to all candidates, examinees were left disappointed and termed the process “unfair”. Shrabani Singha, who scored an average of 88 per cent after normalization, wondered if she could get admission in a Delhi University college under the current system.

“Whether I will get my dream college or not? Only NTA knows about this. Another such student, Arya claimed to have scored full marks in RAW score in Political Science.

“I had to take the exam twice because one of my exams was cancelled. I cannot believe that I will not be able to take admission in Delhi University,” he said. He added that CUET and the National Testing Agency (NTA) have “shattered all their dreams.” “How unfair will this process be? How and why normalized marks are also a ground for admission. It is totally biased and unfair. I am already facing 100 shortfall in marks due to normalization,” said BHU candidate Priya Yadav said.

Ritu Dahiya, who is seeking admission in Jamia Millia Islamia said, “First NTA issued wrong answer key. Secondly, it leads to a decrease in the normalization score. Third, only normalization scores will be accepted by the universities. “What should I do with these low scores @DG_NTA? Just because you guys couldn’t manage an all India level exam efficiently, our entire career is at stake!,” tweeted Calcutta University candidate Mishti Das.

As per the NTA, the performance of each candidate was assessed using the “even-percentage method”. Under this method, the normalized scores of each candidate are calculated using the percentage of each group of students in a given session over multiple days for the same subject. Unreasonable and unjust calculations in the name of “normalization” have ruined the chances of a good college for many like me. We worked really hard. We deserve better,” said CUET candidate Raj.

Echoing his sentiments was Pallavi Yadav, who said, “late results, days of worry, technical errors in tests and finally this ‘normalization’ process that reduced my maths marks by almost 20”. After the results of the Common University Entrance Test were declared, UGC Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar on Friday said universities will prepare rank lists for undergraduate admissions on the basis of “normalized” marks and not on the basis of percentile or “raw marks”. .
