Deve Gowda’s grandson Suraj Revanna may contest Karnataka MLC elections

There is a lot of enthusiasm among JD(S) workers in Karnataka as Suraj Revanna, grandson of former prime minister HD Deve Gowda, is likely to contest the December 10 Legislative Council elections in the state.

The Gowda family is said to be seriously considering giving Suraj a ticket to contest from Hassan.

Suraj, a doctor, is actively involved in politics in Deve Gowda’s native place Hassan district.

Sooraj is the second son of former minister HD Revanna, who is the elder son of Deve Gowda.

Sooraj’s elder brother Prajwal Revanna is the MP from Hassan constituency.

His supporters point out that Sooraj was instrumental in campaigning during the last assembly election to ensure his father’s victory.

Known to be a reserved person, Sooraj is always seen with party workers and never misses out on invitations for birthdays and small occasions.

Suraj has confined his political activities to Hassan district.

JD(S) state president HK Kumaraswamy said that, apart from Suraj, the party is considering several candidates and a final decision is yet to be taken.

However, Sooraj’s uncle and former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy has said that no decision has been taken yet on fielding Sooraj or any other candidate.

Sooraj’s mother Bhavani Revanna is a former district panchayat member. During his tenure as the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Education, Hassan district topped the list in the state in SSLC examination results.

Sources said that he may also get a chance to contest the elections.

Apart from Deve Gowda, six of his family members are in active politics in the state.

Desperate to carve a niche in state politics against national parties, the JD(S) seeks to dominate the politics of her family’s native district.

However, the BJP had dealt a blow to the JD(S) by winning the Hassan assembly constituency in the last election. BJP MLA Pritam Gowda is challenging the powerful Deve Gowda family in Hassan with the party’s support.
