Dilip Ghosh’s sudden announcement to ‘finish’ BJP march to secretariat creates confusion

Confusion prevailed amid the march to the West Bengal BJP’s secretariat, when its senior leader Dilip Ghosh, who was leading a procession, announced that the Nabanna rally had ended after clashes broke out between police and party workers. And he left from there. The BJP national vice-president made this statement after police stopped the procession, which was heading towards the state secretariat Nabanna, near the Rabindra Setu, known as the Howrah bridge, which connects Kolkata and Howrah at around 2.30 pm. adds up.

Police used tear gas shells, water cannons and batons to prevent supporters of the saffron party from proceeding from the Kolkata side to Howrah, where the state secretariat is located. The BJP has taken out three processions led by different leaders from different places to protest the alleged corrupt practices of the Trinamool Congress government.

When Ghosh’s remarks about Nabanna Abhiyan Sesha (Nabanna rally ended) were conveyed to state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar, he said, “Dilip da’s procession may have been stopped and ended, but other processions are on.” The police also stopped Majumdar’s rally and he sat on the road in protest. Later, he was taken into custody and taken to the police.

Ghosh later said that his remarks were misunderstood by the media.

“When the police used brute force to stop the procession led by me near the Howrah bridge, injuring many, I announced that our march to Nabanna was over. I did not talk about other processions,” said the former state BJP president.

“While Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari and MP Locket Chatterjee were detained before the rally began, we and other leaders were on the ground and we are all united on this issue,” Ghosh said.

BJP state spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya said Ghosh made the remarks when a procession led by him from the College Square area was stopped by police using force.

“Since a senior leader was appointed to lead each rally from different points in Howrah and Kolkata, it was not possible for Dilip-da to continue the protest elsewhere. Nothing else should be read in this,” Bhattacharya said.

TMC does not want to comment on the issue.

“The Nabanna campaign of the BJP turned out to be a flop show. They wanted to be in the news by vandalizing, damaging and setting fire to state properties. But the alert police force did not allow the situation to escalate further and thwarted the game plan of the BJP. There is nothing more to say about this,” TMC state spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said.

A police vehicle was set on fire, and several people – police personnel and BJP supporters – were injured during the protest rally.
