Election Commission seeks report from Pithoragarh DM on ballot tampering video

The Election Commission has taken cognizance of a video purportedly showing tampering of postal ballots and has sought a report from the District Magistrate of Pithoragarh at the earliest. The recording is said to have taken place from Didihat constituency.

Additional Chief Electoral Officer C Ravi Shankar said action would be taken in the matter after receiving his report. AICC general secretary and former chief minister Harish Rawat on Tuesday shared a video on Twitter and Facebook in which a man in army uniform was seen ticking and signing several postal ballot papers and asked whether the election body Will take notice of it. Meanwhile, Pithoragarh SP Lokeshwar Singh said that on the complaint of Didihat Congress candidate Pradeep Pal, an FIR has been registered against unknown persons under sections of the IPC and Representation of the People Act.

He said that the veracity of the video is being verified. BJP leaders including Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and state party president Madan Kaushik termed the video as “fake”. “The video is fake. The Congress has made it in an attempt to save face as it can anticipate its defeat in the assembly polls, Dhami said in Haldwani on Wednesday.

Kaushik said the party did it as it knew that it was going to lose in the assembly elections and wanted to blame democratic institutions for its defeat. He also called it an insult to the armed forces.
