Solid state battery start up joins the likes of QuantumScape

Factorial Energy, a US-based startup working on solid-state batteries, has revealed that it has received investments from Mercedes-Benz and Stelantis, in addition to investments from Hyundai and its subsidiary Kia. Factorial Energy claims to have developed a technology that can provide an improved range of 25 percent to 50 percent per charge.

It has its own Factorial Electrolyte System technology that uses a solid electrolyte material to enable safer and more reliable cell performance with higher capacity electrodes at similar prices to conventional lithium-ion batteries. Earlier this month, it announced its partnership with Hyundai to jointly develop solid-state batteries for electric cars. Hyundai’s investments are towards solid-state technologies from the cell level to module to vehicle integration.

Stelantis in particular is a big catch for Factorial Energy as it is the parent of 15 brands, including Jeep, RAM, Fiat, Dodge, Pegoute, Vauxhall, Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Chrysler. “Our investment in Factorial and other highly recognized battery partners enhances the speed and agility required to deliver cutting-edge technology to our electric vehicle portfolio. Such initiatives allow faster times to market and greater access to solid-state technology.” Cost-effective transition will be achieved,” said its CEO Carlos Tavares.

Mercedes-Benz was ambiguous in its disclosures but also enjoys the right to have a representative on the Factorial Energy board of directors. It will test Factorial’s technology over the next five years.

“By intensifying our Mercedes-Benz strategy towards electric only, we have set the course for a fully electric future. We will also take a leading role in battery technology. With Factorial as our new partner, we We are taking research and development in the field of promising solid-state batteries to the next level. For this, we are investing a high double-digit million dollar amount in Factorial. With this collaboration, we are looking to expand battery development and vehicle development. Combine Mercedes-Benz’s expertise in integration with our partner Factorial’s extensive knowledge of solid-state batteries. We share a common vision of CO2 neutrality. The continual development of innovative battery technologies can drive electric mobility for our customers. Will make it even more attractive,” said Mercedes-Benz COO Marcus Schaefer.
