A man from Bihar’s Buxar district, presumed dead after going missing 12 years ago, has been found alive in a jail in Pakistan.
The matter came to the fore after the jail authorities approached the Indian Ministry of External Affairs to verify the statements of the man, identified as Chhavi Kumar, who was reportedly mentally challenged. To cross-check the identity of the image, the ministry sent a letter to the special branch of the Bihar Police, which contacted the SP office in Buxar.
The district police was asked to establish the identity of the person, who is a native of Khilafatpur under Mufassil police station in Buxar district.
“We received a letter from the special branch on Wednesday, after which we went to the village and collected information from the villagers and checked them with the details mentioned in the letter. Locals said that one person from the village was missing. For the past 12 years. Accordingly, we met Chhavi’s mother, who identified her,” said Amit Kumar, SHO of Mufassil police station.
The woman said that the mentally unstable Chhavi had gone missing in 2009 after two years of marriage. He was then 23. When he did not return, the family assumed him dead and even his last Did the rituals too.” said the officer.
“When we told her that Chhavi was still alive, she got emotional and demanded the central government to bring back her son,” Kumar said.
“The Special Branch had received the letter from the Ministry of External Affairs. It was not mentioned how he reached Pakistan or in which jail he is now lodged,” he said.
