Even as over 3.5 crore income tax returns (ITRs) have been filed on the department’s new e-filing portal, soon after it was launched in June, it faced glitches earlier this year, the finance ministry said. After the portal faced technical issues, the finance ministry had asked Infosys, which manages the platform, to address the problems on top priority.

The Finance Ministry in a statement on Thursday said that Revenue Secretary in the ministry Tarun Bajaj along with other senior officials held a review meeting regarding the portal with Mr. Parekh.

According to information provided by Infosys, several steps have been taken including augmentation of technical infrastructure and setting up of a dedicated war room to monitor the performance of the portal.

According to the statement, Infosys has assured the ministry about its preparedness to ensure a smooth filing season to instil confidence among taxpayers.

“Till December 15, 3.59 crore ITRs have been filed on the new e-filing portal. The number of ITRs filed per day has crossed 6 lakh and as of the extended due date of December 31, 2021,” the statement said. growing everyday.” said.

Of these, about 52 per cent have been filed using online ITR forms on the ITR portal and the rest have been uploaded using ITRs generated from offline software utilities, the statement said.

The ministry also said that it is encouraging to note that 3.11 crore returns have been e-verified and of them over 2.69 crore were through Aadhaar-based One Time Password (OTP).

The process of e-verification through Aadhaar-based OTP and other methods is crucial for the department to initiate the process of ITR and issue of refund, if any.
