As Men’s Hockey World Cup 2023 gears up to begin in Odisha, we take a look at past winners

India will aim to lift men’s hockey World Cup title for the second time as they look to begin their campaign in the showpiece event on January 13. India It won its solitary World Cup title in the third edition of the event in 1975.

And since then the Indian men’s hockey team could not reach the final of the World Cup even once. India produced their best performance since winning the trophy in 1975, claiming the fifth spot in the 1994 edition of the World Cup. In the last Men’s Hockey World Cup section, India suffered a quarter-final exit after a 2-1 loss against the Netherlands.

As the Men’s Hockey World Cup 2023 is about to begin in Odisha, it is time to take a look at the past winners.

In the inaugural edition of the World Cup, Pakistan outperformed Spain in 1971 to lift the trophy.

India managed to reach the summit clash in the next edition of the World Cup in 1973. India’s sensational run in the final came to an end after they lost on penalties to the Dutch side. India’s long wait finally ended in 1975 when they defeated arch-rivals Pakistan to win their first World Cup title.

Pakistan became the first side in the tournament’s history to successfully defend their World Cup title. Pakistan had achieved this sensational feat in 1982 after claiming the silverware twice in a row.

In 1986, Australia won their first World Cup title, defeating England in the final.

Four years later, the Netherlands won the coveted World Cup title for the second time.

In 1994, Pakistan defeated the Netherlands in the final to secure their fourth World Cup title.

In 1998, the Netherlands became world champions for the third time after the Dutch side defeated Spain in a thrilling final. The Netherlands recorded a 3–2 victory to claim their third World Cup title.

Germany defeated Australia in the next two World Cup finals to emerge as world champions.

In the final of the 2010 Men’s Hockey World Cup, the Germans once again managed to reach the final but were defeated by Australia this time.

The Australian team took forward their talents in the 2014 Hockey World Cup edition. Australia retained the championship by defeating the Netherlands 6–1 in the final.

In the previous edition of the Men’s Hockey World Cup, Belgium secured their first title with a win over the Netherlands.
