Security concern has increased among people due to bypass construction

The construction of the Nandi-Chengottukavu bypass has posed a security challenge for some local residents, who own a small amount of land on either side of the project area.

Though they have already handed over a part of their property for the road construction, many houses located in the remaining land close to the excavated site are likely to collapse due to delay in construction of a retaining wall.

“Due to the financial crisis, we are not in a position to shift to some other safer place. Many of us now have less than five cents of land, which will have to be protected at any cost,” said a resident, who has sought a favorable action from local administrators and revenue officials. According to him, a proper retaining wall should be constructed in the higher areas to avoid accidental cave-in of the houses during the rainy season.

A group of residents have taken up the matter with the District Magistrate for prompt action. He said that the officials are yet to inspect the spot. He pointed out that the landowner himself would not be able to invest a huge amount for the construction of the retaining wall.

Cracks have developed near the houses indicating gradual cave in. The contractors working for the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) are of the view that the retaining wall cannot be constructed till the completion of the road project.

Meanwhile, some members of the local body said that the matter has already been brought to the notice of higher authorities. He said only a few houses are located in such problem areas near Komathukara, and the matter would be resolved.
