FIH World Cup 2023: Hardik Singh likely to be ruled out of Wales clash with hamstring injury

Last Update: January 16, 2023, 23:35 IST

India’s attacking midfielder Hardik Singh is almost out of the team’s last hockey World Cup group match against Wales due to a hamstring injury.

One of the team’s most impressive performers, the 24-year-old scored a goal in India’s 2-0 win against Spain and created a flurry of chances in Sunday’s 0-0 draw against England.

Hardik was injured during the match against England in Rourkela.

The home team will play Wales here on Thursday.

However, an official confirmation on his status is awaited. A source close to the team said no decision has been made on a replacement and it is unlikely the team will ask to go ahead.

An MRI and other scans were carried out on the injured player, and it has also been learned that the team management are against him playing against Wales, which could open up the possibility of aggravating the injury.

The team is trying to assess the seriousness of the injury before taking a final call.

With just three minutes left in the game on Sunday, Hardik limped off the field.

In the post-match press conference, head coach Graham Reid said it was not as serious as initially suspected.
