Delhi on Wednesday reported its first dengue death this year. The details were shared after the death of SHO Rajneesh Sharma, who was admitted to a hospital in the national capital.

The deceased had turned out to be dengue positive a few days back.

According to a civic report released on Monday, in October, Delhi recorded over 1,200 cases of dengue, taking the infection of the vector-borne disease to over the 2,000-mark so far this year. The 1,238 cases reported till October 26 are more than half of the total dengue cases reported this year.

The city has also recorded 200 cases of malaria and 40 cases of chikungunya this year, the report said.

As of October 19, the number of dengue infections stood at 1,876.

According to the report released by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), around 300 new cases were reported in the following week, taking the total number of dengue cases in Delhi till October 26 this year to 2,175.

Of the total reported cases, 693 were registered in September.

This is the highest number of dengue cases reported during the period January 1 to October 26 since 2017, when the figure stood at 3,829, the report said.

In 2015, the city witnessed a massive dengue outbreak, with the number of cases crossing 10,600 in October. This was Delhi’s worst dengue outbreak since 1996.

According to the MCD report released on Monday, the city recorded 23 dengue cases in January, 16 in February, 22 in March, 20 in April, 30 in May, 32 in June, 26 in July and 75 in August.

Cases of vector-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria are usually reported between July and November, sometimes extending to mid-December.

According to MCD health department officials, symptoms of vector-borne diseases include high fever, headache, rash and muscle and joint pain, similar to those of COVID-19, including fever or chills, muscle or body aches. also includes. Fatigue and headache among others.

First recorded dengue cases

Last year, the city recorded 9,613 dengue cases, the highest since 2015, along with 23 deaths, the highest since 2016.

According to the report, in 2018, Delhi recorded 1,595 dengue cases during the period from January 1 to October 26. The respective figures in 2019, 2020 and 2021 were 1069, 612 and 1,537 respectively.

Ten deaths each were due to dengue in 2016 and 2017, four in 2018 and two in 2019.

Official data showed that Delhi recorded 4,431 dengue cases in 2016, 4,726 in 2017, 2,798 in 2018, 2,036 in 2019 and 1,072 in 2020.

The MCD report said that till October 26 this year, breeding of mosquito larvae has been found in 1,55,312 households.

The authorities have issued 1,09,505 legal notices for mosquito-borne situations and 42,928 prosecutions have been initiated so far.
