Former Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal may throw his hat in the AIFF Presidential election

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal may throw his hat in the election of All India According to sources, the Football Federation (AIFF) announced her as the presidential candidate later this month.

The 59-year-old Sonowal, who is currently holding the Ports, Shipping and Waterways portfolio in the Union Council of Ministers and is a former Union Sports Minister, has approached the Assam Football Association regarding a possible nomination for the AIFF elections. But, nothing is. So far official as he is weighing the pros and cons. According to sources, he is yet to move on from his own party, the BJP.

A source in the Assam Football Association told PTI, “He (Sonowal) has approached the Assam FA president regarding the AIFF elections, the election of the president’s post.” We will definitely support the President of AIFF. But, it is not official yet. He hasn’t told us after all that he wants to stand for the post of AIFF president.

Under the draft constitution of AIFF, any Indian citizen and member of the electoral college can contest for the post of President in AIFF elections. Sonowal, a Rajya Sabha member of the BJP, served as the Sangh. Play Minister for two years from May 2014 before becoming the Chief Minister of Assam from 2016 to 2021. He was earlier also the President of the Assam Olympic Association.


The Committee of Administrators (CoA), which governs the sport in the country, has already appointed the Returning Officer for the elections to the Executive Committee of the AIFF on August 28. The COA has prepared the timeline for the AIFF elections.

As per the Supreme Court order, the returning officer will prepare the final list of voters, including representatives from 36 state associations and 36 representatives of 24 men’s and 12 women’s football players. Nomination papers can be filed from August 17 to 19. candidates and handed over to the Returning Officer personally or by post.

Candidates can withdraw their names between 22 to 24 August. The returning officers will prepare the final list of candidates on August 25 and elections will be held three days later. Counting of votes will take place on August 28/29 and results will be declared.

The CoA includes Justice (Retd) AR Dave, former chief Election Commissioner SY Qureshi and former India captain Bhaskar Ganguly. Some former players had supported former captain Bhaichung Bhutia to stand for the post of AIFF president.
