Former Sri Lankan cricketer serves tea, buns to people in petrol queues; hail the internet

An adversity often brings out the best in you – at least that’s what we’ve seen during the months-long lockdown in India. During that adversarial phase, we saw people, including celebrities like Sonu Sood and Irfan Pathan, going the extra mile to help those in need (with food, clothing, shelter and more). In the midst of the country’s unprecedented fuel crisis, we recently received yet another heartwarming news from Sri Lanka. Former Sri Lankan cricketer Roshan Mahanama was recently seen serving tea and roti to people who were waiting in long queues at fuel stations in Colombo to buy fuel and cooking gas. For those unaware, Sri Lanka is reportedly facing its “worst economic crisis since independence”. An ANI report said that there has been an acute shortage of essential items like food, medicine, cooking gas, other fuels, toilet paper and even matches in the country. The report further states that it has also affected agriculture and livelihood to a great extent.

Roshan Mahanama recently shared some pictures of him serving food and tea to people in petrol/fuel queues on Twitter and wrote that on June 19, “We served food for people in Buthagamuwa, thanks to my friends for this. For kind donations. UK and we have been able to deliver over 1250 meals in the last few days. We expect to cover a large area in Buthagamuwa regularly from this week onwards.”

Mahanama further explained that the images were shared on social media with the intention of raising awareness about the ongoing food crisis in Sri Lanka. He urged the people to come forward and help the people of their community during the ongoing crisis.

Another person commented, “Proud of me as you were my childhood hero, and your thoughts and actions towards our fellow citizens at this critical time are highly valued. Thank you, Sir Roshan.”

“Love and salute from India. You are living up to your name of being “Roshan” (shining) “Mahanama” (big name),” wrote another person.

A tweet further read, “During your playing days you were a great player and now you are a great human being by helping others during the financial crisis.”
