Gambia cough syrup death: Jaishankar talks to Gambian counterpart on child deaths, assures serious investigation

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar spoke to his Gambian counterpart Dr Mamadou Tangara on Thursday and condoled the deaths of young children allegedly linked to contaminated cough syrups produced in India. He assured Tangara that a serious investigation is being conducted by the appropriate authorities in India to ascertain the facts about the India-made cough and cold syrup by the World Health Organization, “potentially causing serious kidney injuries and the death of 66 children.” linked to”.

The minister said in a tweet, “Dr Mamadou Tangara in a telecon with Gambian FM expressed his deepest condolences on the recent death of young children. Underlined that the matter is being seriously investigated by the appropriate authorities. We Agreed to keep in touch.”

The World Health Organization had issued an alert on four cough and cold medicines made in India. “Possibly associated with severe kidney injuries and 66 deaths in children in The Gambia”.

Meanwhile, the Center has constituted a four-member panel to analyze and examine the detailed report shared by the World Health Organization on the issue. The Committee will examine and analyze the adverse event report, causal relationship and all relevant details shared by WHO, and make appropriate advice and recommendations on further course of action to DCGI. The committee will be headed by Dr. YK Gupta, Vice Chairman, Standing National Committee on Medicines.
