Ghaziabad:

A 23-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh went live on social media on Tuesday with one purpose: to broadcast his attempt to die by suicide. However, within 15 minutes of starting the livestream, police officers arrived at his Ghaziabad home and stopped him after a heads-up with Meta in California.

In March last year, an agreement between Meta and the Uttar Pradesh Police saved Abhay Shukla’s life, as Facebook immediately alerted the media center of the state DGP’s office via email.

Anshu Jain, a senior Ghaziabad police officer, said, “The man is originally from Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh and had recently suffered a loss of Rs 90,000, which is why he took the extreme step.”

On receiving the alert, the Ghaziabad police rushed to trace Mr. Shukla’s house and after some difficulty, they were able to trace his exact location in Vijayanagar area of Ghaziabad. The police found Abhay Shukla in his room and restrained him before he could carry out the suicide attempt.

Last December, a 27-year-old man in Guwahati committed suicide citing pressure from his family and his girlfriend’s refusal to marry him during a live-casting on Facebook. His family blamed the woman’s family for his death.
