Government launches four-year integrated B.Ed for future teachers

In line with the New Education Policy (NEP), the government has notified a four-year integrated teacher education programme. Now, the B.Ed course will be integrated and will be of four years duration. Students pursuing four-year B.Ed degree will get BA and B.Ed or B.Sc and B.Ed or B.Com and B.Ed degrees together. Typically, it will take students five years to complete these two degrees. The integrated degree would provide both degrees and would save one year for the students.

Former Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank had earlier announced that this new integrated curriculum would help in making teachers in sync with the new education policy. Since the education policy includes several changes in the curriculum including teaching in the regional language, teaching coding to school children, the new degree will prepare teachers accordingly and there will be a new curriculum.

The government aims to make the four-year integrated B.Ed the minimum degree required for teaching by 2030. The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) under the Ministry of Education has designed the curriculum of this course in such a way that it enables a student- teacher to have a degree in Education as well as History, Mathematics, Science, Arts, Economics. Or to obtain a degree in a particular discipline like commerce. The new BEd courses will allow specialization in the education of ‘gifted children’.

The four-year ITEP will start from the academic session 2022-23. Admission for this will be done through National Common Entrance Test (NCET) by National Testing Agency (NTA). This course will be offered by multidisciplinary institutions and will become the minimum degree qualification for school teachers.

“The curriculum will contribute significantly to the revitalization of the entire teacher education sector. The prospective teachers undergoing this course through a multidisciplinary environment based on Indian values and traditions will be aligned with the needs of the 21st century at global standards, and hence will be instrumental in shaping the future of New India to a large extent, the education ministry said in an official statement.

One and two year B.Ed options will also be available. The two-year B.Ed will be for candidates with a bachelor’s degree, and the one-year B.Ed program will be offered only to those who have completed the four-year multidisciplinary equivalent of a bachelor’s degree or who have obtained a master’s degree. These candidates will subsequently be hired as subject teachers in the field of specialty (or subject done at UG or PG level) in NEP 2020 states.
