Government shortlists 9,000 schools for ‘PM-Shri’ – a plan to set up model schools with smart classrooms

New Delhi: The education ministry has shortlisted 9,000 schools from across the country and will soon announce the first set of schools among them that are eligible for its flagship Prime Minister’s School for Rising India (PM SHRI), ThePrint has learnt.

Those shortlisted are existing schools, which if they make the cut, will be advanced In model schools where students will be trained to participate in hackathons and excel in studies and other co-curricular activities. Equipped with smart classrooms and better infrastructure, PM Shree Schools will reflect the National Education Policy (NEP) perfectly.

The idea behind this scheme is to establish model schools and get other educational institutions to follow their lead in terms of teaching and learning methods.

The shortlisting institutions were chosen from over 2.5 lakh government schools, including Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalayas, which were found eligible to apply for the tag. They were assessed on the basis of six broad parameters: ‘Curriculum, Pedagogy and Evaluation’; ‘Access and infrastructure’; ‘Human Resource – Leadership’; ‘Inclusive Practices and Gender Equality’; ‘Management, Monitoring and Governance’; and ‘beneficiary satisfaction’.

An education ministry official told ThePrint, “We are very satisfied with them (the shortlisted schools) and will make an announcement very soon about the names of the schools (which will make the cut).

Once developed, PM-Shri schools will be run in partnership between the central and state governments, with the former contributing 60 per cent of the funds and the latter pitching in the remaining 40 per cent. The official quoted earlier also said that barring seven states – Bihar, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Delhi and Jharkhand, most of the states have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the ministry to participate in the PM-SHRI scheme. “We have urged all states to sign an MoU with the Center to participate in the scheme, but these seven states are yet to do so. The scheme is for the benefit of the states as it is going to improve the educational infrastructure,” said the official.
