The NCP spokesperson also recalled that Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla had said that constitutional bodies should refrain from activism and stick to their responsibilities.

The Sharad Pawar-led NCP on Thursday said the governors of Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu should heed the advice of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and follow the highest standards of their constitutional post.

“Honorable Governors should do what the Vice President does India And the Lok Sabha Speaker is giving advice,” said NCP national spokesperson Clyde Crasto.

Cresto said that if constitutional institutions must abstain from activism, stick to their responsibilities and confine themselves to their respective domains as per the vice president’s wishes, then governors should do the same.

Citing media reports, he said that the Vice President had said that all constitutional institutions would have to confine themselves to their respective spheres and adhere to the highest standards of decorum and decency.

The NCP spokesperson also recalled that Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla had said that constitutional bodies should refrain from activism and stick to their responsibilities.

Crasto said, “These statements of his should also apply to the constitutional post of governor.”

He said that there are many cases when governors have shown signs of going out of their sphere of influence and not sticking to their responsibilities.

Crasto said two governors who come to mind are Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, who was at frequent loggerheads with the MVA government, and more recently Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi, who did not adhere to his constitutional position.

“Therefore, in order to uphold the dignity and sanctity of a constitutional post, all honorable governors must follow the advice of the Vice President of India and the Speaker of the Lok Sabha,” the NCP spokesperson said.
