The language of WhatsApp and social media has affected the oral and written communication of children. When sending messages, people often use abbreviations like You instead of U, Thnx instead of Thanks, PLZ instead of Please, and BCZ instead of Because. However, it is not limited to just social media platforms. Children are also using these words in their answer sheets.
School students in Uttar Pradesh have used these languages in their exam answers. They have become accustomed to writing such words and as a result words like GR8 (GREAT) have started appearing in children’s copies. Mrignayani Arya, a teacher of English at Maharishi Patanjali Vidya Mandir, told live hindustan That such words are often used in children’s copies.
Father Thomas Kumar, Principal of St. Joseph’s College, said that this trend is being seen more among the youth. Though he does not consider it wrong as it is a medium of exchange of ideas, but said that children should not forget the correct language. It may be convenient to write words in abbreviated form, but it should not be used on copy.
There are two forms of language – one is colloquial language and the other is literary language. The colloquial language varies or evolves according to convenience as it is used only for daily life, whereas the use of literary language is vast and widespread. Literary language is taught to children in school. However, as a result of mixing both the forms of the language in the current social system, children have started writing the WhatsApp language in copies as well.
