A group of 13-year-old boys find a 1,000-year-old canoe belonging to a Native American tribe.

A group of 13-year-old boys discovered the canoe and pulled it from a watery grave in North Carolina, US, last week.

We’ve all seen the Disney movies where a bottle lying on the shore contains a map or a letter from a sailor to his lover. Even due to natural calamities like Tsunami, floods, when the water goes back, it sometimes takes many precious elements along with it. And just like that, a nearly 1,000-year-old canoe was found by a group of 13-year-old boys and exhumed last week from its watery grave in North Carolina, US.

As The News Reporter reports, the group of boys stumbled upon the canoe in the summer of 2021, but thought it was a normal log. State officials later examined the canoe at that time and later moved it under a dock to protect it until it was completely dug up.

Last week, on April 12, workers finally pulled the canoe, which is approximately 930 years old, from Lake Wakamawa in Columbus County, North Carolina, according to a statement released by the Heritage Commission.

Following the excavation, Wakamau Siouen Chief Michael Jacobs said that over the years he has always been questioned about their history, where they came from and who they are. “Now, we have the physical history to back it up. We’re eager to investigate it, run some tests on it, really find out and go back to our elders and get the history of it where we can tell our people.” We can teach you the truth and know that we have solid evidence to stand by,” Chief Jacobs said.

The North Carolina American Indian Heritage Commission and the Wakamau Sijuan Tribe worked together to pull the canoe from the water. Once they brought the boat to shore last week, it was placed in a chamber, covered with damp towels and wrapped in plastic to preserve it. The canoe will be taken to a laboratory and treated with chemicals to prevent it from deteriorating.
