Nadal withdraws from Madrid Open, says recovery is taking longer than expected

Spanish professional tennis player Rafael Nadal announced on 20 April that he will miss next week’s Madrid Open as his recovery from a hip injury is progressing slower than expected. The Madrid Open, which Nadal has won five times, starts on Monday.

Ever since the 22-time Grand Slam winner suffered a left hip flexor injury at the Australian Open in January, it has kept him out of Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Madrid tournaments.

The 36-year-old took to Instagram to say, “As you know I had a big injury in Australia, in Paisos. Initially it was supposed to be a six to eight week recovery period and now we are at fourteen. The reality is That the situation is not what we had expected. All medical indications have been followed but somehow the development has not been what they initially told us and we find ourselves in a difficult situation.”

Here’s the Instagram message:

Among other things, he is not even sure whether he will be fit till May to play in the prestigious French Open starting May 28.

Apart from this, Nadal said, “The injury is still not healed and I can’t decide what I need to compete. I was training, but now a few days ago we decided to make a slight change in the course, Have decided to try another treatment and see if things get better to try what’s next. I can’t give a time frame because if I knew I would let you know but I don’t know. Now That’s how things are.”

“I also want to send a special greeting to all of Madrid and the Spanish public as I will not be able to play the two tournaments that I play here at home,” he added.

Nadal said he has no choice but to try to keep the right attitude during this time and give himself a chance to compete in one of the remaining tournaments of the clay season.
