The Gujarat government has decided to cut its grant-in-aid to schools if the school performs poorly in the Gujarat Board Class 10 and 12 results. Rs 300 will be deducted instead of Rs 100 per student for poor performance in board results. Announcing the decision through his Twitter page, Gujarat Education Minister Jitu Vaghani said that the decisions taken to improve the quality and outcome of education in the state include a fine of Rs 100 per student in the grant under the Outcome Based Grant Policy. which has now been increased to Rs 200 per student annually.

Introduced in August 2013, the Government of Gujarat’s Performance-Linked Grant Policy links school grant-in-aid with student performance in Class 10 and 12 examinations. Under this scheme, schools with less than 30 percent pass rate in Gujarat board exams were penalized with a deduction of Rs 100 per student. However, after the policy was amended in 2015, grant-in-aid schools with less than 30 percent results in class 10th or 12th were not eligible for any maintenance grant. Schools with a passing result of 70 percent or more were eligible for 100 percent grant.

The latest announcement takes the policy back to its original model but with a few changes.

According to the release shared by Vaghani on Twitter, the schools will also run extra classes for the students before and after the time period to help the students improve their performance. Teachers will also work on holidays and weekends to improve results
