UK police complete investigation into Johnson’s ‘Partygate’ scam – Times of India

LONDON: Britain’s Metropolitan Police said on Thursday that it has completed its investigation into violations of COVID-19 regulations in British government offices, including the prime minister’s. boris johnsonof official residence, with a total of 126 fines issued on offences.
Police said they issued fixed-penalty notices to 53 men and 73 women for gatherings on eight dates between May 2020, at the height of the first wave of the pandemic, and April 2021. Some people got multiple fines. The matter has been termed as “partygate” by the media.
Johnson apologized last month when he revealed he was among dozens of people who paid police fines for participating lockdown breaking parties and meetings. This made him the first British leader to be accepted for breaking the law while in office.
Revelations that Johnson and other senior officials had gathered illegally in government buildings at a time when millions of people in the country cling to the government lockdown restrictions to slow down spread of covid-19 Voters have outraged and demanded Johnson resign.
The conclusion of the police investigation means that the results of a separate investigation by a senior civil servant can now be published. Government officials say Sue Grey’s report will be published as soon as possible.
The police did not identify the fines, but the treasurer Rishi SunkiAlso Johnson’s wife, Carey, has said that she was fined along with Johnson for attending a birthday party for the prime minister.
Liberal Democrats leader Ed Davey said the Gray Report should now be “published without delay.”
“The public made huge sacrifices when Boris Johnson went to the party, they deserve the full truth,” he tweeted.
