HC seeks status report from Delhi Police on Jamia violence cases

The Delhi High Court on Thursday asked the Delhi Police to submit the latest status of cases related to incidents of violence at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) campus in December 2019 during the students’ protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

The HC was hearing a batch of petitions filed by lawyers, Jamia students and residents of South Delhi’s Okhla, seeking setting up of a judicial commission to probe the Jamia violence and registration of FIRs against erring police officials Was.

The Delhi Police had earlier defended its decision to enter the university campus during the violence in December, saying it was done to control the “violent form of unlawful assembly”.

The petitioners had contended that there was a need for a SIT that was independent of the police and the central government, which by its conduct showed that their investigation into the violence was “not independent”.

He also argued for a fact-finding committee, stating that the Supreme Court had also suggested the same and setting up such a body was “the best way to soothe or heal the wounds of students”. Will happen”.
